Make Babies! August 18, 2006

There are a total of 3 articles concerning Singapore’s ageing population in the papers today. Then there was the Malay comprehension I did in class today which also had to do with the aged. Okay, so basically this is the situation in Singapore at the moment.

The current Total Fertility Rate is hovering at 1.24, well below the replacement level of 2.1, and that translates to about 15 000 babies being born each year, 45 000 short of the required 60 000. If the current trend continues, Singapore’s population by the year 2065 (100th National Day) will be 1.5 million, less than half of what it is now. And that in turn translates to one in every two citizens not having any descendents to inherit Singapore in 60 years and not being able to propel their honourable family name into the future! (Oh no! What will happen to that wonderfully leegendary family?)

I don’t know about you, but the figures presented above are somewhat disturbing. I’m having these perturbing and inchoate visions forming in my mind about an infecund piece of land, the sad and only remains of a young nation that began peaking only 40 years into its independence. It’s almost like an entire population being wiped out! Similar to what transpired in Krypton – self-destruction.

Okay people, the message here is clear!

Have more babies!

No, no, that’s not enough!

Have MORE!
